This weeks Tech Tuesday tip is about worn brake pads. Do your brakes squeal when coming to a stop? What happens if you ignore the noise and continue to drive like it’s no big deal? First, lets talk about why the brakes are squealing. There is a small piece of metal attached to the brake pad that contacts the brake rotor when the pad is worn down. That indicator grinding against the brake rotor is what causes the squealing noise when you apply the brakes. What does this mean for you? Well, you need to have them looked at. If you continue to drive on noisy brakes the brake pad can be worn down severely which can leave deep grooves in the brake rotor. If the grooves are very deep the rotor will likely need to be replaced, however, if the grooves aren’t very deep you can have them turned to give the rotor a new, smooth surface. Having the rotors turned is usually less costly than having to replace them completely. Thankfully, the Service Department at Woody’s Automotive Group is very skilled at spotting worn pads as well as damaged rotors. To schedule an appointment just give them a call at 888-869-0963 ext. 24
